A group of young counterculture leaders move to a remote
Californian wilderness to create a new society, armed only
with a slogan: "Free Land for Free People." They
live together at the Black Bear Ranch, an abandoned gold mining
ranch nestled within a million acre wilderness. To implode
their 1950's upbringing, they attempt to reprogram their minds,
bodies, and souls to create something entirely revolutionary...a
worldwide "free family."
But exploring endless freedom creates bigger problems. Their
would-be utopia is beset by FBI harassment, jealousy, and
a cult that take their "experiments in living" to
a dangerously extreme level. With explosive archival footage
from yesterday, to the perceptive children of the Ranch today,
"Commune" is the first real insider look at communal
living, and how seemingly small personal choices can create
shock waves felt throughout the world.
Featuring actor Peter Coyote, herbalist Michael Tierra ("The
Way of Herbs"), and Chinese medicine pioneers Efrem Korngoild
and Harriet Beinfield ("Between Heaven & Earth").
